How to get my parents to stop talking to me about adult issues?
Be clear on what you want and be consistent in the message you send them.
If one moment you allow them to talk to you about adult issues and the next time you don’t. They will learn that they can talk about this stuff with you.
Being clear looks like “Please don’t talk to me about this.” or “This isn’t something you should talk about with me.” Giving this message each time they try will direct them back to what your boundaries are. Sometimes this is called the “broken record” technique.
It’s normal to feel upset or sad about shutting down your parents' conversations, but it is not your responsibility to take care of their emotions.
